Week 9

After ExpoTalent, I felt a renewed motivation for this module, and threw myself into learning a new aspect of Unreal Engine, and something I've wanted to learn for a long, long time; namely cinematics and full render passes.

The first thing I did was to make sure my light mode was set to 'Production'. Just to make sure the video quality would be as high as it could be, before rebuilding lighting only (using the shortcut i've only just learned despite 2 years of educational use of UE4).

Then, as is usual with anything to do with UE4, i took to YouTube for a tutorial on how to create cinematics.

Following this tutorial was easy, and before I knew it I'd compiled a few shots that were useable but could also be spliced to better fit the video.

When it came to editing, I had a very specific theme I wanted it to fit into. So I started by watching the Life is Strange Season 1 trailer way too many times to get a good idea of how the source material presented itself.

Editing the video together was simple, as I've had plenty of experience using Adobe Premiere Pro. It works similarly to Photoshop, using layers to build up what we see on screen in the editor and then compiling everything once it's in place.

I made sure to find a font that was as close to the Protagonist's handwriting (Dudu Calligraphy) on Dafont, and then set to work editing.

I won't go into massive amounts of detail, but I spent roughly three hours editing what I had together, finding music, adding effects and transitions, and then finally rendered the movie out to upload on YouTube.

Overall, I am happy with the progress I made this week, as most of my time was dedicated to Journeyman. Next week I plan on making a mini diorama of sorts for the other asset (my Jinx Grenade), and am considering learning to use Substance Designer to get at least a texture for the base I have planned.
